a diya is a traditional candle (oil lamp) used on diwali to adorn every corner of your home with light. Diwali is known as the festival of light, celebrating good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness. These little candles are lit to mark this special day, but in many homes (like my own), they are used every morning or evening and symbolize the desire to reach your best self. I use them as part of my daily ritual.
