♥ why am I fundraising for this cause and where does the money go?
My life has been impacted by these rare soft tissue tumours. There is currently no cure and treatments are all based on clinical trial data. Over the years, I have gone through a major surgery, 6 weeks of daily radiation and years of chemo. I sometimes wonder if these fundraisers are worthwhile, or self-serving, but I remind myself that if I don't raise awareness, advocate for more advanced research and help raise funds, I am not a part of the solution. So while I hope this will help me, I know it is for a much larger community that I am a part of. A community that has become more like a family.
DFC is a small, volunteer-run charity, based in the Greater Toronto Area. During the pandemic, many charities were not able to plan their annual events, and this was the case for DFC as well. Fortunately, a lovely family from British Columbia decided to dedicate their annual cycling event, Athina's Ride, to DFC's research as well. This was a great substitute for our annual event and together we raised over $75,000 in 2021. While this is a great accomplishment, our goal is double that amount. We hope to raise $150,000 this year will all proceeds devoted to tumour research initiatives.
